Our first podcast episode was Beginners for Ben’s Birthday, and one year later we are back for another Birthday Super Munch post for Ben’s Birthday. This time we sit down and watch the green-filled film Great Expectations, an interesting film that at a younger age captured Ben’s attentions. Frances Chiem joins us in unpacking all of the different themes and moments as we try to determine whether or not we actually liked the film. We talk about a theory of Ms. Nora Digger Dinsmore being a fairy and everything surrounding her is affected and moved by her wills. Her character is actually balanced by the essence of man in the Robert De Niro character and through all of this Finn, played by Ethan Hawke, is stuck in the middle torn between these opposing forces. We wonder how unreliable the narrator is in this film and how he viewed the world around him. We talk about what we think the prevalence of the color green means in the film at large, and if it means anything. We finally converse on whether we would prefer to be “rich and a hack” or “talented and poor.” We talk about how life as it is depicted in the movie has changed so much from where we are now, and that this film is the idea “thirst” visualized. And that closes out another episode of the Munch podcast. Thank you so much for joining us.

Join us on an “every other week” schedule, as we talk through a variety of films, the humor we find in them, and the food we make for them.
